Journalists in Africa get guidebook on Climate Change reporting

Journalists in Africa have been introduced to a guidebook to direct them in accurate reporting of climate change issues.

The 91-page guidebook will direct journalists to better inform people to understand the changing climate and the need to protect and restore the rapid deterioration of the environment.

Anita Plummer, a Professor at the International Affairs Centre of Spelman College in the US has stated that “our environment where we live, where we work, play, pray and study – is our responsibility and what we do today is not only impacting our future – it is impacting the here and now.”

New environmental challenges starring in the face of Ghana include climate change, sanitation and waste management, chemical use and misuse, illegal mining and the impacts of oil discovery and electronic waste.

Study Shows Remarkable social progress in Congo Basin region when forests are Certified

 The first ever study dwelling on the social impact of Forest certification in the Congo Basin forest area has shown tremendous benefits to the riverine forest population.  Forest certification for sustainable management provide more benefits to communities than uncertified forests, according to a new study of Congo basin logging concessions by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)presented in Yaounde Cameroon on April 7, 2014 by WWF-Cameroon, CIFOR Cameroon and the ministry of forestry and wildlife.

Cameroon Gov’t Urged to protect evicted minority Mbororo pastoralist from ancestral Land

Over 300 people have been evicted from their ancestral lands, rendered homeless and more vulnerable to the effects of extreme climate in the locality of Banjah- Bamenda in the Northwest of Cameroon. Houses of the entire minority Mbororo pastoralists were recently forcefully demolished by authorities of the Catholic Church despite running battles, complaints and land conflicts involving the pastoralist community and the Catholic University.

As i walk towards dusty, crowded and densely populated streets of Kayole estate in Nairobi, the polluted environment full of littered plastic bags, swamps loaded with all kinds of waste ranging from human to industrial, lead me to closely built flats which serve as homes to people here. Life seems slow here, women murmuring in low tones, some drunk with red eyes protruding, children playing along dirty trenches of dark  water, small make shift structures, famously known as vibandas – tiny  wrapped vegetable branches ,sachets of  household items like tealeaves, coffee, powder soaps and sweets , are scattered at every street.

For many a Ghanaian, the experience of a heavy downpour on an Independence Day is a rare occurrence. This is because early March is not often associated with heavy rainfall.

March 6, 2014 was however exceptional. The rains came down heavy in the nation’s capital, Accra and other regions of Ghana.
